Dental implants are artificial titanium models of teeth roots. They are ideal as replacements for missing teeth, which patient may have lost due to an accidnt, gum diseases or poor oral hygiene. Dental implants can be fixed with a real ceramic or plastic model of a tooth over them, called crowns.
There are two main types of dental implants: individual and bridge. Individual implants are inserted right into the jaw. Bridge implants are connected to neighbour teeth. When your implants are in place, they, as said before, can be fixed up with a crown, made of several materials like ceramic, plastic or metal.
Modern dental implants look just like real teeth, so it’s a great opportunity for people, who’ve lost their teeth to obtain a beautiful smile again. Dental implants don’t provide any discomfort or pain, if they are installed properly. An ordinary man can’t notice much defference between a real tooth and a good dental implant.
There are only three major types of dental implants: endosteal implants, sub-periosteal implants and artificial bone substitute implants. Artificial bone substitute implants use a calcium substitute to be installed over the jaw bone. Endosteal implants are inserted into the jaw instead of the missing tooth root. Sub-periosteal implants are good for old persons. These implants are installed straight over the jaw bone.
Surgical procedures for dental implants nowadays are no more painful. Local anesthetics allow dentist to perform painless dental surgeries. However, you have to find a really good dentist and dental surgeon.
Unfortunately, dental implant surgeries are quite expensive. Their total costs may range from $600 to $7000 depending on the type of dental implant used and whether a maxillofacial surgeon is required or not. Commonly, an operation for single tooth including surgery cost around $2000. Most dental surgeries can’t be covered by dental plans and patient have to pay for the operation himself.
